Passive RFID tags(RFID Tags) are those energized by the reader itsef. The RFID tags contain no power source, but have very long lifetimes (near indefinite) typically. Compared with active tags, a drawback of passive tag is the read range, which can typically reach 2cm (1in) to 1.5m (4.5 ft); but a strong positive is the individual tag cost of a passive tag.
In an RFID system, the transponder which contains the data to be transmitted is called an RF tag. Passive RF tags obtain operating power generated from the RF reader. This kind of tag are smaller and lighter than active tags but have a shorter communication range and require a high powered reader. Passive tags are generally read-only and as such, once it is programmed with data, that data cannot be modified.
